About Alyssa

I asked her what she thought was unique about herself and she had an amazing response:

I am unapologetically myself! I always put my authentic self forward no matter what, even if it means I am standing alone. I am not afraid to be loud, messy, or even make mistakes and I feel that this is definitely reflected in my flow as an artist. I hope to show other new and inspiring artists that it doesn't matter where you come from or what your background may be, anyone can pick up a prop and become a flow artist. I am an active member in my community and love spreading the joy that comes from hooping. I am an amazing team player and will always be there to offer a helping hand to anyone.

What inspired you to start your journey:

My inspiration to begin my flow journey and more specifically hooping came from a spark that was ignited in me during a really dark time for me mentally. Growing up I think we all desire to be apart of something larger than ourselves, to create, and more importantly to feel something, and that is exactly what hooping has done for me. I was an angsty teen who was just having fun attending festivals and shows with my friends trying to forget the troubles we all faced. I was always mesmerized by the flow artists that attended and performed for these festivals. The emotions they got to express so beautifully through movement captured my gaze. I loved that no matter what these artists were going through their hoop allowed them to feel and work through these emotions and turn it into something beautiful. I longed to be as brave and confident, but most importantly, as care-free and happy these people seemed. I always thought to myself, that I would never be able to do what they could, but continued to be fully submerged into the idea of becoming a flow artist. I knew that I couldn't be stuck in this rut anymore. I purchased my first ever hoop and the rest is history! I spent countless hours just trying to waist hoop as this was something I could never do as a child, yet here I am! My hoop has brought me confidence and the emotional outlet to just be myself, and most importantly to be human! My hoop continues to inspire me everyday and has helped me become the person I am today.

A little bit more about Alyssa:

My name is Alyssa, you can call my Lyss for short. I have been hooping for roughly 5 years now and I am 23 years old. I am 100% self taught and have learned everything I know from friends in the community or videos online. I have a drive like no other and once I set my mind to something I know I will achieve it. I am a Sagittarius that definitely lives up to the title, I am an easy-going, adventure loving, free-spirited person who is always on the go. I swear if you'd ask me what I am working on next, I would have a long list of active projects I am doing. I love performing and would love to get more into being able to perform with my hoop. If there is one thing I miss from high school it is definitely being on stage. I didn't know it back then, but this is where I belong. I am a healthcare worker and part time student who has a passion for improving mental health. I love helping people in any way that I can, but what I find purpose in the most is helping people regain their light. The human body fascinates me, but I can't help to think to myself what good is a healthy body with a sick mind? Your mental health directly correlates to your quality of life and I hope to find a solution for everybody who is feeling less than perfect. The flow arts community benefits people mentally in tremendous ways, sometimes a little movement is all you need. I am grateful to have found an outlet that allows me to improve my own mental health and I hope it can do the same for you!

What is your favorite music genre to flow to?

I love to flow to any live music, something about just being able to physically feel the vibrations and be fully encapsulated in the moment is surreal to me. I love anything with a funky beat.

Do you flow with any other props? If so what are some of your other favorites?

Yes! I am becoming more comfortable with double hoops and am a beginner with the dragon staff. I love broadening my skillset and facing a new challenge.
